HBD’s first city centre development in Birmingham brings contemporary residential living to an area with a strong commercial history.
The Jewellery Quarter has a unique identity and presence all of its own. That character is reflected in the ambitious plans for Setl – a 102-unit build that is well spaced, appropriately proportioned and designed with the residents’ living experience in mind. As a result, the scheme is likely to have a wide appeal across different demographics.
We approached architects BPN, who are specialists in the Jewellery Quarter, and briefed them that we were aiming to replace a 1960s office block with a new, high-quality residential scheme in this premium location. With historic buildings and a Georgian Square in close proximity, it’s important to ensure that the redevelopment is in keeping with its setting. The use of red terracotta as a principle elevation material speaks to that tradition.
In terms of the offering to potential residents, we are looking to balance design with functionality. By adding respected landscape gardeners and interior designers into the mix, we’ve prioritised a real sense of community. There will be well-planted outdoor space, a roof garden for residents and a hotel-style reception and communal seating area which doubles as a communal lounge for residents and work-from-home area.
Over 5,000 sq ft of commercial space on Ludgate Hill will provide a perfect complement to the development, attracting independent restaurants, leisure operators and other businesses to deliver essential amenities.
