Puppucinos & pampering as Manchester’s The Barkside brings dog street fashion to Kampus

Manchester’s pooches are in for a treat as The Barkside is set to open a boutique dog salon and lifestyle store at Kampus, the city’s rental garden neighbourhood.

It’ll be a one-stop-shop for city-dwelling dogs, with a grooming salon and shop stocking The Barkside’s signature street-fashion, their own brand of nutritious foods, luxury grooming products and quality accessories. It follows the Barkside’s monthly events at Kampus, that have seen residents in the pet-friendly apartments hang out together.

Furry clients will also be sampling the laid-back Kampus neighbourhood lifestyle, with doggy mud baths (a perfect de-shedding treatment) and frothy puppuccinos, so they don’t miss out on the café culture.

The Barkside’s first day care was set up back in 2013. Elkie, Leah and Lauren – along with their team – have  since gone from strength to the strength, opening a doggy day care, salon and shop on Travis St in Manchester and in Heaton Chapel, Stockport – with a lengthy waiting list from would-be clients.

The new Kampus store, opening onto the garden and in the historic listed Minto & Turner building, will be open seven days a week and cater to booming numbers of the city centre dog owners. Manchester is fast gaining a reputation as one of the nation’s most dog-friendly cities with pet-friendly homes for rent at Kampus.

Elkie Davies, founder of The Barkside, said:

“Dog friendly communities like Kampus are leading the way. Other renters across Manchester are no longer banned from having pet companions and tonnes of people are working and spending more time at home. It’s meant, whether you love Dachshunds or Dobermans, you can have a place in the city centre and experience the pure joy of having a dog in your life.

“We fell in love with the space and garden at Kampus and can’t wait to bring The Barkside to the neighbourhood alongside a load of independent businesses. We’ve been turning customers away because the demand for quality grooming and daycare in Manchester is so high – it’ll be awesome to bringing top-notch products, pampering and puppuccinos to our expanded puppy family.”

The Barkside team have gained a loyal following, with their 12k Instagram followers lapping up snaps of their four-legged clientele on the streets of city.

They’re the latest independent venture set to join Kampus, the neighbourhood being developed by HBD and Capital&Centric. Manchester favourites Pollen bakery and General Stores are also confirmed, alongside the recently-opened Nell’s New York Pizza & Bar, wine bar Beeswing and recently-announced Cloudwater Brewery.

Adam Brady, at HBD, said:

“We’re a friendly and diverse neighbourhood and the indie businesses joining our community reflect that ethos. That welcome extends to our four-legged friends and the army of dogs that now call Kampus home, with a dog-walking services for residents. The Barkside joining the community means people will be able to drop their dog for a grooming session have a coffee and pastry at Pollen while they wait.”

Kampus, is a vibrant new neighbourhood built around a garden developed by CAPITAL&CENTRIC and HBD. Its collection of old and new buildings offers a melting pot of architectural styles and builds on a rich cultural heritage, making use of historic buildings that lay derelict for years, right next to the famous Canal Street in Manchester’s Gay Village and just minutes from Piccadilly Station.

The Kampus gardens and Bungalow are the central feature of the community and are permanently open to the public, with the Bungalow operating as a village hall for pop-up events and community groups. The neighbourhood is alive with events and will be home to local independent bars, restaurants, cafés and retail from brands.

All of the apartments at Kampus are for rent. Residents can choose from one and two bedroom apartments in the beautiful red-brick new buildings North and South Block, refurbished 1960s brutalist tower called The Stack or two Victorian shipping warehouses, Minto & Turner and Minshull House.

Residents renting at Kampus will have access to a brand new gym with free weights, cardio and core equipment and a yoga studio, a 24 hour concierge service and amenities from dog walking, dry cleaning, PT sessions and yoga, a private cinema, lounge, dining room and a number of terraces.  What’s more, residents can move into their brand-new apartment with no deposit to pay.
